Andrew Wu was a consultant surgeon, musician, artist, and sailing enthusiast. He devoted his whole working life and career to the NHS and to his patients. His legacy inspired the founding of the Liver Cancer Appeal. Aside from his medical work, his many humanitarian efforts raised vital funds such as his climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and volunteering for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Chad.
He was a loving partner, a father to two sons and a daughter, a grandfather, uncle, and a loyal friend to many.
Andrew was born in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation. The family soon left for Shanghai, returning to Hong Kong when the war was over. He began his education soon after, later continuing in Sabah, Malaysia.
A promising start
He won a scholarship to, and became a medical graduate of Queensland University, Australia. Alongside his medical studies, Andrew became deeply involved with his piano playing. In his fifth undergraduate year, his diligent practice and commitment won him the prestigious Queensland concerto competition, where he performed Bartok’s Piano Concerto no. 3 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, conducted …
