Rosemary Jane Chambers (“Jane”) was born in England, but at the age of 4 she was evacuated with her mother and one sister to New Zealand to avoid the second world war. After returning to England to complete her schooling, Jane, a bright diligent child, chose to study medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where girls had only just been admitted to study medicine.
