By encouraging cycling, cities can reduce air pollution and increase physical activity among people who live and work in them. This benefits cardiovascular health twice over. Many places have introduced bicycle sharing schemes, and the Belgian city of Antwerp has one of the most successful. Although cycling in Antwerp was already popular, two wheeled traffic increased by more than 20% after a sharing system was implemented (Eur Heart J doi:10.1093/eurheartj/ehaa058). A network of electric bikes, which allow longer, faster journeys and commuters to arrive cool rather than sweating, is planned.
