Royal College of Pathologists: president elect is barred after misconduct allegations are upheld

The Royal College of Pathologists has barred its president elect, Peter Furness, from taking office after a disciplinary panel convened by the college upheld allegations of misconduct against him.

Furness, 64, who was due to take over as president in November, is a consultant histopathologist at Leicester Royal Infirmary and honorary professor of renal pathology at Leicester University. He ran for the presidency and was elected on a platform that argued that “the college should cut back to its core function of defining and maintaining quality.” He had previously served as president from 2008 to 2011.
