Ruth Lewty was born in Lancaster, the eldest of three sisters. She had a rural upbringing and attended Lancaster Girls Grammar School. She studied medicine at St Andrews University and subsequently Dundee, qualifying in 1957. There is a notable family link in that her sister (Beth), daughter (Jane), and granddaughter (Iona) all studied at St Andrews too. Ruth kept many …
