Blood markers to diagnose Parkinson’s . . . and other stories

Screening 1000 different proteins in blood samples from people with Parkinson’s disease and controls identified 10 candidate biomarkers for the disease. Four of these markers—bone sialoprotein, osteomodulin, aminoacylase-1, and growth hormone receptor—were also able to distinguish between people with Parkinson’s disease and controls in a second round of testing in another group of people (PLoS Med doi:10.1371/journal.pmed.1002931). The investigators hope that it will be possible to develop a blood based diagnostic test.
