Brought up in Troon, Ayrshire, Isabella Mary Shirley (“Diz”) had her first encounter with sarcoidosis (at that time unrecognised) during her clinical training in Glasgow, which led to her delayed graduation. Recurrence (and formal diagnosis) during postgraduate training at University College Hospital, London, dashed her hopes of a career in obstetrics.
