In 1940 John Pentland Alexander and his family were evacuated from the south of England to County Fermanagh, where he attended Portora Royal School in Enniskillen. He learnt the art of fly fishing from his father, who had learnt while visiting Kashmir when stationed with the Royal Army Medical Corps before and during the second world war.
