Turabali M H Chakera (“Turab”) was born in Dar Es Salaam, Tanganyika (now Tanzania, Africa), the middle child in a family of five children. After initial education in east Africa, Turab, at the age of 15 years, was sent to the UK to study for A levels and then read medicine at the University of Birmingham Medical School. After completing house jobs in Birmingham, he held senior house officer posts in Plymouth and then a registrar position in Southampton, obtaining his membership of the Royal College of Physicians in 1970.
