George Edward Foster was born in Liverpool. Encouraged to study medicine by his mother, he was awarded a scholarship to Liverpool University. He enjoyed his student days, recalling that he tried not to drink too much at least once or twice a week.
After house jobs in Liverpool, he became a demonstrator and lecturer in anatomy in the city for three years. During this time he passed part 1 of the FRCS and completed an MD in neurobiology. The latter work lead to the first of many published papers and a lifelong interest in research.
