John Last was born in South Australia and educated at St Peter’s College and the University of Adelaide. After 10 years in hospital posts in Australia and Britain, ship’s surgeon posts with the British merchant marine, and general practice in Adelaide, he trained in public health sciences and epidemiology at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, University of Sydney, and the Medical Research Council’s social medicine research unit in London, England. He held academic positions at the University of Sydney, the University of Vermont, and the Usher Institute of Public Health at the University of Edinburgh, before joining the staff of the University of Ottawa where he was chairman of the department of epidemiology and community …
