Statistics chief asks for clarity on source of “new” NHS money

The UK Statistics Authority has written to the Department of Health and Social Care asking how it justified its recent claims about £1.8bn of new funding for the NHS in England.
When the prime minister announced the spending on 5 August,1 he referred to it as “a new £1.8bn cash injection.” The Department of Health and Social Care explained in a press release that this “new” money consisted of £850m for 20 hospitals to upgrade facilities and equipment and a £1bn boost to NHS capital spending.
