NHS in England to offer prenatal repair for spina bifida “within weeks,” after NICE approval

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended in draft guidance that babies at risk of spina bifida be operated on in the womb using an open repair technique in specialised NHS centres by clinical teams with specific training and experience.1

It concluded, however, that there was not enough evidence to recommend the prenatal keyhole technique for spina bifida and advised that this procedure should only be used in the context of research.
