Research evaluating AI for diagnosing disease is weak, finds review

Artificial intelligence (AI)—also known as deep learning—might be able to detect diseases from medical imaging with similar levels of accuracy as doctors, according to a review of current evidence.1

The researchers advised caution, however, as there were few high quality studies, and little evidence directly comparing the performance of humans and machines, or looking at AI’s performance in real clinical environments.

The team said this means that the true diagnostic power of the AI “remains uncertain.”
