MP calls for independent review of benefits and harms of statins

MP Norman Lamb, chair of the parliamentary Science and Technology Committee, has written to the Department of Health and Social Care to call for an independent review of all evidence relating to the effectiveness of statins and side effects they may cause.

The letter, addressed to chief scientific adviser Chris Whitty and seen by The BMJ, said the review must be independent of “scientists with personal or institutional ties to drug companies that manufacture statins.”
