Isobel Tomkins grew up in Beckenham, Kent, as the oldest of three sisters. She was educated at Bromley County Grammar School for Girls and went on to study medicine at St Bartholomew’s. When she qualified, the dean described her as quiet, conscientious, and methodical, but she had also been an active student participant and kept goal for the hockey team. Most importantly she developed strong friendships that remained throughout her adult life.
