Four in 10 emergency admissions from care homes could be avoided with better community care, says report

Emergency admissions to hospital from care homes could be reduced significantly by increasing NHS support and giving better preventative care, a new report from the Health Foundation has found.1

The analysis found that 41% of emergency admissions from care homes were for avoidable conditions that are potentially manageable, treatable, or preventable outside of a hospital setting, or that could have been caused by poor care or neglect. These conditions include chest infections, pressure sores, and urinary tract infections.
