James Denis Fair Lockhart (“Denis”) was born in February 1932 at the European Hospital in Tabora, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), where his father, also a doctor, was a colonial medical officer (he was later, during the second world war, director of health at Nairobi). After schooling in Africa and then at Stowe School, Denis followed his parents into the medical profession. He studied at Trinity College Dublin, where his mother had qualified as a doctor in 1925.
