In 1989 Roger Sutton accepted a partnership in Leigh Park (then one of Europe’s biggest council estates), fully aware that he would work harder and earn less than many GPs. Before taking up the post he and I, with three others, ran a relay from Paris to London, giving me a first glimpse of his athleticism (he completed the Bob Graham round) and his exceptional human qualities. His talent and uncomplaining physical resilience had close parallels in the way he was as a doctor, partner, and friend.
