Interesting article. Why not encourage international doctors to temporarily train in the UK? Especially for junior or middle-grade doctors. MRCP, MRCS, and other examinations by the UK royal colleges are taken by many of these doctors and thus can serve as a benchmark for their clinical competency to work in the NHS.
The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) have been running the Medical Training Initiative (MTI) for a number of years now. The initiative aims to provide international, non-EU junior and middle-grade doctors the opportunity to train and work in the UK for up to two years . MRCP, FRCP, or other equivalent advanced postgraduate qualifications are required to apply . Other royal colleges also run a similar scheme [2,3].
Win-win situation: these international doctors would get the opportunity to further their training under experienced supervisors in world-class environments, which will surely benefit the institutions they are returning to; NHS trusts benefit from having the extra qualified workforce to temporarily fill the rota gaps as they try to arrive at a long-term solution for this rota gap issue. Since these doctors would return to their home countries, NHS global recruitment would not come at the expense of other countries.
Perhaps a similar scheme should be rolled out on a wider scale.
