It’s particularly difficult to explain in medicine, which is, by and large, a career with a well defined trajectory and non-negotiable pay scales. Trying to unpick this is not straightforward. At first glance it seems to be down to fewer women being in leadership positions: isn’t it scandalous that 77% of the NHS workforce are now female, yet they hold only 37% of senior jobs?1
