Draeger mentions herd immunity while discussing compulsory vaccination.1 The concept of herd immunity arises from ordinary differential equation models, with the population at risk mixing randomly. The model assumes that children in rural Scotland, Wales, or Cornwall have the same chance of contact with a person with measles in London as do children in Westminster.
