Seven NHS trusts made up more than half of all inappropriate out of area placements (OAPs) for acute mental health inpatient care between December 2018 and February 2019, according to data from NHS Digital.1
OAPs occur when a person requiring adult mental health acute inpatient care is placed in a unit outside of their local services, normally away from their family and care coordinator.
The government pledged to eliminate inappropriate mental health OAPs in mental health by 2020-21 as part of the Five Year Forward View.
