Fleming Carswell was born and raised in Argyll. The first in his family to go to University, he graduated from Glasgow Medical School in 1962. After initial junior jobs in Glasgow, he moved to Leeds to study for his PhD. He subsequently returned to Glasgow, where he met and married his wife.
