Marie-Joseph Albert Menagé, known as Albert, was born in Mauritius into an established French-Mauritian family and was the eldest of 13 children. He initially qualified as a sugar chemist, and his ambition was to study medicine, following in the footsteps of other family members. This was made possible by the support of Sir Hubert Seddon. On a visit to Mauritius in 1945 to advise on a polio epidemic, Seddon recommended that the young man he had met should study medicine at …
