Because doctors find it easier to start a new drug than to stop an old one, many patients end up taking a long list of prescribed medicines. Medication reviews, especially if they involve patients and take account of their preferences, ought to help. However, a randomised trial in people over 70 who were taking more than six long term medications suggests that the benefit is disappointingly small (PLoS Med doi:10.1371/journal.pmed.1002798).
