“Successive governments” should of course be blamed. Governments blue, red, and mixed.
But Rajan and McKee forget.
We, the electorate put them in Downing Street. We are to blame.
Aneurin Bevan gave us the NHS. A simple structure. Successive governments complicated it. Wasting money.
Now we come to social safety nets.
The immediate post-war (WW2) governments did build a land fit for heroes.
But the heroes, alas, soon forgot what was needed.
We became, gradually, a land of people who believed in the slogan - each man for himself. Now we do see the Devil taking the hindmost.
We, the people. We might wake up before some general election. Perhaps.
