Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed. Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles. The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being wilfully misrepresented as published articles.
I agree with the author that there is a lack of management skills in many doctors running institutions. This is due to non belief in leaders and managers in health care. Many of the doctors try to do both clinical practice and management. Unfortunately this will not work. There is no compromise at all from these individuals. The power associated with the position (director or superintendent of a hospital, head of the dept, etc) is difficult to sacrifice. That is one of the reasons why there are no good influencing policy makers in the Indian health system.
As we know, leaders are born and few can acquire the skills of leadership. Mentors or seniors should recognise young doctors who are good at leading and with organisation skills and nurture them. These young doctors should be given an opportunity to learn management skills from premier institutions. And should be told either clinical practice or management. Also they should be offered the right positions. Unfortunately this is not happening and many of the corporate & the Govt hospitals are run by the non medics who do not understand the basic needs of health care. Hope this will change for the better. Otherwise, health care in India will be unaffordable and will not achieve development goals.
