The BMA and the Royal College of General Practitioners have disputed claims by the UK Department for Work and Pensions that they agreed the wording of advice issued by the government to doctors on how to administer “fit notes” for severely ill and disabled benefit claimants.
The House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee ordered an inquiry into the issue in response to a series of distressing media reports about people dying as they awaited the result of assessments to determine their eligibility for the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and Employment and Support Allowance.
