Frances Cunningham (“Fran”) came into the medical profession as a mature student after an accomplished career as a registered nurse. She had reached the position of sister in the operating department environment and became one of the first people to hold a joint anaesthetic/operating department practitioner/scrub nurse qualification. The encouragement and support from some of the surgeons with whom she worked persuaded her to undertake her medical degree.
