Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed. Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles. The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being wilfully misrepresented as published articles.
Anyone writing to their MP or various Secretaries of State about this subject is likely to receive a standard response that is both dismissive, and factually incorrect in parts.
That doesn't mean it's worthless to do so- MPs rarely receive letters about any topic, so a few dozen constituents writing can have a disproportionate focussing effect.
Also, some NHS Trusts are giving (or at least sharing) the 14% employers contributions with employees who have left the NHSPS in order to reduce the impact on Trust activity as well as employees pockets.
Other Trusts are clearly hoping that few enough consultants understand this issue, and that service delivery is maintained by employees taking home almost nothing for additional responsibilities and work (or worse, paying significant amounts to come to work) .
And, recent pension consultations, if enacted, will make this situation worse (the higher accrual rate will make doctors hit punishment points several years earlier than currently).
