Organ donation: England’s opt-out system could save 700 lives a year

England will have an opt-out system for organ donation from spring 2020, after a bill to implement the change passed its final stage in the UK parliament this week.

The Organ Donation (Deemed Consent) Bill passed its third reading in the House of Lords, the final hurdle before royal assent. When the law comes into force all people in England will be presumed to consent to donating their organs unless they register their decision to opt out.
