John (Seán) D Carroll was born in Belfast. He was a medical student at the birth of the NHS and received the McGrath gold medal for medicine. A true public servant, he held true to the founding principles of the NHS throughout his career. As a medical student, he was impressed by the words of the professor of medicine, W W D Thompson, that doctors should practise on the basis of the following principles:

  • To heal—sometimes

  • To relieve—often

  • To comfort—always
