Louie Mary Mangar was born in Norwich, the only child and daughter of a headmistress and shoe business owner. she had a happy—albeit lonely—childhood, excelled academically at school, and in 1955 joined a mere handful of other female students for the first year of medicine at Sheffield University. Having married her first husband, Subei Adamo, in 1957, Louie gave birth to her first son, Richard, and combined family life with the highly successful completion of her medical school studies. This was a unique achievement in a British medical school in the mid-1950s. …
