Francis Mills was born in Ghana, west Africa, the second of eight children. Having completed his secondary education in Ghana, Francis’ prodigious talent enabled him to successfully secure a place to study medicine at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, in 1949, and he qualified as a doctor in 1955.
Francis started his medical career as a house surgeon in the general surgery department at Halifax General Hospital before transferring to the hospital’s rheumatology and physical medicine department.
