Geoffrey Spencer was the inspiration and driving force for the development of the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. A trailblazer and a pioneer, he was a consultant anaesthetist at St Thomas’ Hospital from 1965 to 1995, founded the intensive care unit there in 1966, and, in 1968, established the Phipps Respiratory Unit at the South Western Hospital, which moved to St Thomas’ Hospital in 1989.
