GMC chair calls for more frontline consultant presence in hospitals

The newly appointed chair of the General Medical Council has called on senior doctors to provide visible frontline leadership in hospital wards and to call out examples of poor practice where necessary.

In a speech at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow on Thursday 7 March Clare Marx highlighted research showing that having consultant surgeons present on wards improved patients’ mortality rates by 33%.1
