Rapid Response:

Rethinking medicine to strengthen alliances between patients and doctors

It is clear that in medicine we are involved in two movements that broaden the scope of medical practice and sometimes oppose its main actors. The first movement is that emphasizes the social determinants of health and universal coverage ; when the second movement emphasizes the contribution of human skills and medical technologies in the effectiveness of care and patient safety. These two movements are driven and energized by different actors who sometimes find themselves in ideological and opportunistic oppositions that undermine universal access to quality healthcare. Rethinking medicine should also aim to converge these two movements by enabling physicians and patients to play active roles in both movements.
It also means creating partnerships and alliances between patients and physicians that are not limited to the organization of healthcare (intramuros) but which are aimed at regulating health systems and medical progress.
