Brought up on the Nottingham-Derbyshire border, Michael John Leverton (“Mick”) was educated at Worksop College before studying at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and St George’s Hospital Medical School, London. He later recalled that sometimes the only way to keep warm was to ride on a tube train for as long as he and his fellow students could manage. His first hospital placement was in Plymouth, then in Banbury and Stratford-upon-Avon, where he met Margaret. They were married in 1962. Posts in Bristol and Crewe followed before Mick moved to Dalton-in-Furness as a locum general practitioner.
