Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed. Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles. The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being wilfully misrepresented as published articles.
1. I see many patients who have endured many tests and clinic and hospital visits who cannot tell me the results of their tests. I can certainly review them but we must be missing good communication if, after all the expense, risk, and inconvenience of our testing, the patient and family don't have good understanding of those.
2. I also like to try to sense if patients are relieved, disappointed, or both upon hearing about normal tests. This may sound odd, but for some odd reason I recall being disappointed in 3rd grade when I passed a vision test and did not require corrective lenses. In some strange sense, many patients share with me that they have mixed emotions upon receiving "good news". They know something is wrong: normal tests can make them think "this all is in my head" or "I'll bet the doctor thinks this is all in my head".
I'm reminded to be a good listener and try to perceive how the "good news" is received. And grateful for this reminder to be certain I explain test results in a way patients can comprehend and appreciate.
