Alan Rhodes was a skilful surgeon, enabling mentor, and consummate after dinner speaker. After a stellar performance at Wolverhampton grammar school Alan entered Birmingham medical school in 1953, winning many prizes and qualifying with a distinction.
His early interest was in anatomy, first as an anatomy demonstrator in Birmingham and then two years in New York. He returned to the UK in 1963 and rapidly completed surgical training, becoming a consultant in general and paediatric surgery here in Coventry at the very young …
