As a student Ian Alexander Ruthven-Stuart travelled to Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie, USA, where he found himself in nominal charge of a medical ward with acute poliomyelitis, some patients being in “iron lungs.” After returning to complete his final year in Edinburgh and winning the Watson Jones prize, he went on wto the Royal Infirmary under the guidance of Watty Mercer, professor of orthopaedics.
