Digital GP providers that register out-of-area patients could receive less funding under contract revamp

“Digital first” GP providers that register patients from outside their geographical area could receive less money per patient than practices that offer a more complete service, under proposals put forward by NHS England.

The plans are outlined in a consultation document examining how general practice payments might change to “fairly support” the rollout of digital technology around the country.1

It follows concerns that the current GP funding model is not designed to account for new “digital first” providers such as GP in Hand and that this is endangering the financial sustainability of other GP services.
