A 24 year old man attended the emergency department with pain in the lateral left knee after intercepting a pass playing football. Plain anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the knee were obtained, which ruled out the presence of a fracture or lipohaemarthrosis, but instead showed several distinctive lesions (fig 1).
