Peter Tomson was an only child who was brought up by his mother in Somerset; his parents had separated before he was born. This rather solitary childhood probably helps explain Peter’s independence of mind and spirit, his prowess at Bridge at an early age, his desire to innovate, and perhaps even his later interest in family therapy.

He was educated at Sherborne School, then Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he followed up the physiology part 2 with research with R A McCance and E M Widdowson in Wuppertal on recovery from starvation in 1947. He completed his training at University College Hospital, followed by house jobs at UCH and St Pancras Hospital.
