Doug Altman discusses the scandal of medical research

Re: Douglas G Altman: statistician, researcher, and driving force behind global initiatives to improve the reliability of health research

I was very sorry to hear about the death of Professor Doug Altman. I first met Doug when I joined the BMJ’s Hanging Committee (which took the final decision on which papers to accept) in 1996. Doug was the senior statistician on the committee. In the eight years I attended the committee meetings, I learned a lot from Doug about statistical methods and study design, skills I was able to put to good use in my own work. As well as being a towering figure in medical statistics, Doug was always polite and helpful to his colleagues. He will be very much missed.
