I absolutely agree with Dr McCartney's sentiments around creating healthcare environments that are calming, welcoming and facilitate patients being able to relax and feel less anxious. This requires suitable premises in which to work - this is a major challenge in General Practice, especially in London, where so many practices have unsuitable premises yet the cost of land and buildings makes it prohibitive to change it. We have to balance public health promotion for patients with the need to create a calming atmosphere. In my previous practice we had artwork throughout the building and this certainly helped me in terms of being able to be distracted (in a good way) during my working day. I could ignore the posters and enjoy the Impressionists.....
