Michael Edward Lockhart Paterson (“Mike”) was born in Irvine, Scotland, on 11 October 1947, but his family soon moved to Stoke, where his father became a local GP. After qualifying he started training in obstetrics and gynaecology. He completed his MD in 1980, studying the risk of malignancy in menopausal women. Mike’s final training position was in Leeds, where he developed his interest in gynaecological oncology under the stewardship of Roger Peel.
