Free bus travel for older people has unexpected health benefits, according to data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (J Epidemiol Community Health doi:10.1136/jech-2017-210038). A previous analysis showed that bus passes increased travel by public transport and led to more physical activity and less adiposity. The latest study finds benefits for mental health too. Free access to public transport reduced loneliness, increased contact with children and friends, and diminished the prevalence of symptoms of depression.
