President Donald Trump has outlined measures to reduce the prices US consumers pay for prescription drugs through a program called American Patients First,1 but he did not follow through on two campaign promises.
During his campaign Trump had promised to allow the government to negotiate drug prices for the Medicare insurance program, which provides drugs for about 60 million older people, and to allow US consumers to import drugs from Canada. Stock prices of drug and healthcare companies immediately rose after the new announcement.2
